Kitchen Gadgets That are Worth Every Penny

by Kitchen Utensils on October 5, 2009

The kitchen is the center of the home. Whether you have a large family, are a couple, or are single, you probably find that entertaining at your home revolves around the kitchen. With this in mind, it is important to make the time that you spend in the kitchen as stress-free and enjoyable as possible. One way to do this is by investing in tools and gadgets that make food preparation and storage easier.

With the wide variety of kitchen gadgets available, it is easy to become overwhelmed when choosing items for your kitchen. Some kitchen gadgets make life easier for nearly everyone, while others depend on the type of cooking that you do.

Some things that nearly any cook would find helpful in their kitchen include spice grinders, electric kettles, slicing implements such as dicers, and salad spinners. Spice grinders are an excellent addition to the home kitchen. Freshly ground spices are more vibrant and the taste is unlike that of spices purchased already ground. If you have not tasted freshly ground spices, be prepared to add another dimension to your cooking.

An electric kettle is an excellent addition to the kitchen. Electric kettles heat water quickly and safely without using the microwave or stove. While an electric kettle is particularly nice when entertaining, as it allows you to serve tea without clearing off burners that may be holding other food, once you make the decision to add an electric kettle to your kitchen, you will find that you use it quite frequently. A similar appliance that is great for singles or small meals is the electric skillet that uses less energy than your standard stove.

Whether you are a stir fry master or only occasionally make a tossed salad, a dicer or other slicing implement is an excellent investment. Not only does a dicer allow you to quickly slice a variety of vegetables in uniform sizes, but it also protects your hands from cuts as you work.

A salad spinner is one of those gadgets that have only one use, but it does come in handy when you need to wash and dry lettuce, spinach or other greens. To clean greens without a salad spinner you probably rinse them thoroughly under running water and then gently dry them with paper towels. Even then, some greens, such as spinach, seem to hang onto every drop of grit and sand. With a salad spinner you simply rinse, spin and, in less than one minute, you have clean greens.

Some kitchen gadgets than may not be of interest to everyone, but are well designed, are microwave popcorn poppers, funnel pitchers, tiered oven racks and cookie presses. If you have kids in the house, you probably know the expense of providing snack food. With a microwave popcorn popper, you can save money by using regular popcorn kernels to make a snack. In addition to the cost savings, popcorn that you make yourself can be made healthier and tastier than what is available at the grocery store. You can control the amount of butter and salt, and add flavorful combinations such as parmesan cheese and chili powder to add variety to your snack. Microwave popcorn poppers are also simple to use, and after an initial lesson, most children that are comfortable in the kitchen can prepare their own snack.

Funnel pitchers are a great way to keep your kitchen neat and clean when preparing pancakes, waffles, muffins or cupcakes. Simply prepare your mix in the pitcher, and then use the pouring spout to add your batter to the griddle or muffin tin that you are using. This kitchen gadget is worth every penny if you frequently make these types of foods, or if you have frequent help from younger members of your family.

Tiered oven racks are a great gadget for the cook who frequently entertains. These racks go into your oven and allow you to stack casserole dishes or cookie sheets two or three high in your oven, effectively doubling or even tripling your oven space. While you may need to adjust the cooking time for some foods to make up for the crowded oven, tiered oven racks are still a great time saver.

Cookie presses are a lot of fun for families with children. Pressed cookies look very fancy and can be decorated with icing, sprinkles or other ornamentation. Using the cookie press is simple, and, with the variety of cookie plates available, you can make pressing cookies a tradition for every holiday.

As you can see, there are many kitchen gadgets available, with choices for every type of chef. Whether you routinely plan family meals and entertain on a regular basis, or only cook for special occasions, there are undoubtedly several kitchen gadgets available that will make your life easier.

Oxo Good Grips Silicone Basting Pastry Brush

by Kitchen Utensils on July 2, 2009

Oxo Good Grips Silicone Basting Pastry Brush

Happy with your Pastry Brush but unhappy with how it retains odors and clumps when you clean it? Try the OXO Good Grips Silicone Pastry Brush, which works like a natural bristle brush but with the added conveniences of heat resistance, odor resistance and cleanability. Multiple layers of silicone bristles tackle all tasks. Gaps in the center bristles hold liquid as you transfer from bowl to pastry surface, and tapered outer bristles let you brush delicate pastry with ease. The silicone bristles are heat resistant to 600?F so you can spread butter in a hot pan, and the angled Brush head keeps bristles off the countertop. Cleanup is easy in the dishwasher, and these bristles won’t clump, frizz or retain odors.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Works great…..
I was looking for a nice light easy to clean brush and this fits the bill.

5 Stars Great Item
I like silicone basting brushes because they clean easily. I don’t like the hair brush types as they never dry and just build up bacteria.

5 Stars Works great,
I love these Oxo products and stopped buying anything else. They now have a tool that covers everything, including cutting boards and strainers. They’re long lasting, easy to clean and durable. Just a note I don’t put mine in the dishwasher and wash them by hand in order to extend the life of the items.

5 Stars great pastry brush
works great! I threw out all my old brush’s that are not dishwasher safe. A must have for anyone who cooks.

5 Stars Best basting brush ever!
America’s Test Kitchens recommended this brush and I thought I would try it. It exceeded my expectations in every possible way. I use it for BBQ Sauce when I grill. It picks up so much sauce in the unusually shaped bristles and doesn’t drip at all. Each silicon “bristle” has a channel that holds the sauce – this is what makes it so effective. Cleaning is a breeze. As soon as I am done grilling, I run it under warm water and it cleans immediately as if it had never been used. As usual, America’s Test Kitchens know what they are talking about! You won’t find a better brush than this one – it doesn’t exist.

Cameron Cookware Barbeque Smoke Box

by Kitchen Utensils on July 1, 2009

Cameron Cookware Barbeque Smoke Box

This barbecue smoke box is the perfect way to give your meals a full, smoky flavour to enhance the taste of your favourite dish. Use any flavour of wood chips on a gas or charcoal grill. Perfect for smoking fish, steak, ribs, chicken, and more.
Stainless steel.
To use, soak wood chips for 20 minutes. Slide open the lid of the smoke box and fill with wood chips. Place the smoke box in the barbecue on top of charcoal or flavourize bars. Ignite the barbecue; when smoke appears from the smoke box, start the cooking process. Smoke will last approximately 15 – 20 minutes. Dispose of the wood chip residue before the next use of the smoke box.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars very good smoker
this smoker is very nice. you get a little smoke with the lid closed or more by opening the sliding lid slightly . i don’t use water because the smoker sits on top of the grates.

5 Stars GREAT Smoker
This is one of the BEST Smoker I have ever used, and I have been BBQ for some 40+ years.

5 Stars Great box to add great flavor
This is a great smoker box!

A few things that stood out to me when I first opened the box:

- The thickness of the walls. I was worried it was going to be made from flimsy sheet metal, but I was mistaken. This is a good, study box.

- The handle is a useful feature. I didn’t really pay any attention to this until I had to move it while I was grilling.

One thing to pay close attention to is the height of the box. This box will not fit under my grate because it’s too tall. So if you are looking for a box to sit on the flavor bars, make sure this box will fit your grill. I have been sitting the box on my grate and it is been giving me great results.

5 Stars s/s smoker box
Most of the smoker boxes that I’ve seen are too small, poorly made, and are for wood chips only. This box is perfect for me since I prefer wood chunks.Even though it’s made in India, it’s quality is excellent. The top slides on to the bottom and the handle folds over for easy storage.Another positive is that the only holes in the box are on the top. This is perfect for long lasting smoke,no flame-up, just smoldering wood.I use this on a Weber propane grill, resting it on a flavorizer bar with the burner beneath on low.I know this box will last many, many years.

Oxo Good Grips Stainless Steel Turner

by Kitchen Utensils on June 30, 2009

Oxo Good Grips Stainless Steel Turner

The uses for this turner are as varied as the turner is durable–made of stainless steel, the turner moves easily from crepes to steaks. An oversized hanging hole makes storage easy, and the large, cushioned, nonslip handle has flexible rubber fins for a comfortable grip. As are all Oxo gadgets, this utensil is dishwasher-safe. –Laurie Notaro

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Good Spatula
I was tired of buying cheap spatulas that broke at the weld after a few uses. So far, this spatula is exactly what I expected. It has no weld between the turner and handle to break and it doesn’t bend when I press down on a hamburger. The handle has a nice soft grip.

Even though it seemed a little high priced, I am glad to finally have a spatula that may last more than a few months.

5 Stars Spatula that you’ll adore.
Another fine product by Oxo Good Grips. Good value for a sturdy spatula that will not bend out of shape. Love the comfy grip too.

5 Stars Good and solid
This spatula is a solid one that works well in cooking things. So far, I’ve mainly used it to turn meat when frying or sauteing food on the cooktop. It replaced a really cheap one and my husband laughed when he saw it because it was so much more solid than the previous one. I told him we would be passing it on to someone in our will!

5 Stars Great Stainless Steel Spatula at a great price
we bought many of the OXO Good Grip items to replace our old and unattractive kitchen utensils, and love the quality, comfortable grips, and looks of our new kitchen essentials.

I would recommend the OXO Good Grips to any of my family or friends with no hesitation. we are very impressed by the OXO Good Grips utensils for the comfortable handles, quality construction looks and price.

5 Stars I would have paid so much more.
When I switched over to all stainless steel pots and pans I knew my nylon utensil days were at last OVER. I reviewed and visited the most expensive sets in the kitchen specialty stores to examine the hype. I gently stressed the hinges and rubber attachments when they had them. I also noticed a lot of the brushed stainless had burnished (polished) spots on them just from hanging on the racks. Not pretty. The hands down winner of my research was the OXO 79* mirror polished utensil series. This is the only set of steel utensils that I’ve found to have the die struck edges polished as well. Oxo’s design team must give each other high-fives when they see their finished products. They really should.

After countless weeks of comparison shopping, I’m confident that for the quality and construction of these utensils, they are WAY under priced. I’ve had them for a year now and it’s easy to see they’re gonna last for years. Super tough construction, the rubber attachments are thick and TIGHT. Also, the steel is the thickest I found (1mm) which makes a world of difference. Simply perfect, simply beautiful.

I was able to find all pieces that I needed except the pasta fork OXO Good Grips 79791 Stainless Steel Spaghetti Fork, until now. I had literally search the world over (via web) for months and forgot that I had put it in my wish list here on Amazon. By golly they found it and flagged it for me on my opening page! Thank you Amazon for completing my set!
